Judging a “Book of Love” by its covers

I don’t know a whole lot about Nataly Dawn. A friend let me know about her cover of a really cool Magnetic Fields song, “Book of Love,” and through a little digging on Dawn’s myspace page, I found that she’s covered Regina Spektor, OK Go and Rufus Wainwright, among others. Also, apparently this song and video are a cover of Peter Gabriel’s cover of “Book of Love.” Regardless, this song is pretty, and I’ve provided the original Magnetic Fields song, Gabriel’s cover and some other fun covers of the song. Enjoy!

Book of Love” by Robin Pecknold of Fleet Foxes

Book of Love” by Mike Doughty

And because the lyrics are pretty awesome and tongue-in-cheek, here they are.

The book of love is long and boring
No one can lift the damn thing
It’s full of charts and facts and figures
And instructions for dancing
But I, I love it when you read to me
And you, you can read me anything

The book of love has music in it
In fact, that’s where music comes from
Some of it is just transcendental
Some of it is just really dumb, but
I, I love it when you sing to me, and
You, you can sing me anything

The book of love is long and boring
And written very long ago
It’s full of flowers and heart-shaped boxes
And things we’re all too young to know, but
I, I love it when you give me things
And you, you ought to give me wedding rings

BONUS! Nataly Dawn covering A: Ok Go’s “Do What You Want,” and B: Regina Spektor’s “Us.”
