Oh no, oh no, where did they go: Rainer Maria

My courtship with Rainer Maria was brief but brilliant. I became a fan of the band when their album Catastrophe Keeps Us Together slid across a table to me while I was working in college radio. It would turn out to be the capstone to their extensive catalog, as the band would play their last show eight days before Christmas in 2006. Rainer Maria, I hardly knew ye.

Even though I was not acquainted with this Brooklyn-via-Madison, Wisconsin band for very long, I was smitten. I still find myself singing along quite loudly to the pseudo-title track from Catastrophe Keeps Us Together. Caithlin DeMarrais provides vocals I’d compare to Jenny Lewis of Rilo Kiley and solo fame or Emily Haines of Metric and also with The Soft Skeleton fame. It rocks, it’s heartfelt and DeMarrais plays the bass as well, which I think is hot.

This will be a weekly feature from now on at TWJ: Bands we loved, briefly or for long stretches, that either broke up or seemingly dropped off the face of the earth. The first is Rainer Maria. Enjoy.
