Beach Fossils never stray too far from a very effective formula. Dustin Pasyeur’s vocals are always awash in reverb, there’s always a jangly guitar melody that carries the song from point A to point B, and then there’s a steady but never overpowering drumbeat that keeps the toes tapping.
That Beach Fossils’ self-titled LP can be boiled down to its most consistent parts is not a knock on the music. The songs are just heavy enough to sink into your eardrums, but also airy enough to be a nice accompaniment to a walk down an actual beach. Whether you look for fossils while soaking in the hazy sunshine this record has in spades is up to you.
There’s something to be said for a band doing the things it does best to the fullest, track after track. That’s what Beach Fossils does with its newest record, and what I hope comes across in what we offer you from it here at TWJ. It might not blow you away, but Beach Fossils can keep you warm on a chilly summer drive with the windows down, blasting from your car stereo.
