The Gertrudes: Wind From The South

The Gertrudes are a 12-piece band from Kingston, Ontario, Canada. How does a duodectet compose a musical love letter? They invite more musicians, of course! All 12 members of The Gertrudes assembled at Kingston School of Music in January of 2008. As a follow up to their debut EP Hard Water, the band decided to use as many of their Kingston friends as possible as a tribute to the place they love (Kingston). More than 100 musicians from the KSM are used on Dawn Time Riot, which will be out October 16 on Apple Crisp .

The Gertrudes’ sound is, as one might expect from their generous helping of members, a blending of styles. There are elements of bluegrass and folk, country and rock, and even one member whose instrument is listed as “‘bone.” The first single from Dawn Time Riot has an Arcade Fire vibe, with its sprawling multi-instrument composition. There are synths, guitars, drums, chimes, trumpets and others. Add in a wonderful male/female harmony, and you have a solid 3 minute and 36 second journey that is as compelling as it is well-structured. Give a listen!
