Will Stratton is just a man with a guitar. Scratch that. Will Stratton is just a man with a guitar and a gift. A gift for strumming and picking, a gift for rhythm and for melody, a gift for singing in a low register and grabbing one’s heart. I suppose that’s several gifts. Let’s move on.
Stratton is a 23-year old Brooklynite who by his own branding, makes music called, among other things, minimalist. He recorded his first album just after graduating high school, and that record featured a guest appearance by Sufjan Stevens, of all people. The obvious comparison — and one he has mentioned himself — is Nick Drake. He’s been featured as the song of the day on NPR, and his third album, New Vanguard Blues, was released in July.
Stratton makes the most of what he’s got. He crafts compelling guitar-folk narratives that are subtle and yet powerful.
