Legend has it that Zac and Ethan Holtzman discovered Dengue Fever lead singer Chhom Nimol in a nightclub in the Little Cambodia area of Long Beach, Calif. The band’s early blend of Cambodian pop and American surf rock was sung entirely in Khmer, and Nimol’s vocal talents were always the icing on the band’s delicious cake.
Dengue Fever’s material has evolved to include myriad influences, but Nimol’s unique voice still provides the spice that makes the band interesting. Their new LP Cannibal Courtship includes lyrics sung in both Khmer and English, sometimes in the same song. The tune we offer here, “Family Business,” delivers scrumptious guitar hooks and some moog-ey goodness. It’s a really interesting melting pot of sounds and textures.
