Dark, thick sustenance. The English have a picture of their native Wild Beasts hidden in collective lockets, all close and warm next to their soggy hearts. But it’s true, the Kendal quartet is a secret treasure. On “Bed of Nails” from their excellent, excellent new album Smother, a dance wave seeps quietly into a night confessional. The mass majority of Wild Beast songs are about sex, but the voice of Hayden Thorpe makes each time feel like the first time.
If there’s an album you actually buy this month, make it Smother.
(Smother is available now from Domino Records)
