YACHT’s 2009 album See Mystery Lights was one of the pleasantly quirky surprises of my music exploration that year. The band’s off-kilter, melodic, sonically charged sound walks a fine line between kitschy and charming, but it was all fun for me. So a scheduled June 21 release of the band’s forthcoming album Shangri-La — and the two thoroughly engrossing singles that have emerged thus far — was a welcome bit of news for this particular listener.
Since Shangri-La‘s initial single “Dystopia (The Earth Is On Fire)” is a defiant, hard-charging, funky apocalyptic romp, one might expect that the new single the band released recently, titled “Utopia,” to be its polar opposite. But the song employs much of the same effects and rhythm of its counterpart. To me, “Utopia” sounds a hell of a lot like early of Montreal. But maybe that’s just me. Check out both songs below.
