Charlie Berger is a one-man show. The Toronto native has created a compelling collection of songs — every part of which he recorded himself in his basement apartment — under the moniker With Hidden Noise. An interesting blend of shoegaze and sunny 60’s pop, with a little doo-wop flavor thrown in for good measure, the compositions on Married To The Sea are simple but alluring.
There’s plenty of reverb and synth mixed with Berger’s capable vocals, which at times sound like they’re being sung from very far away. But that affect is intentional, and it only adds to the dreamy feel on songs like “Salt Waltz.” The traditional stuff like guitar and drums is there as well, and the backing vocal tracks flesh out many of the songs quite nicely. “Don’t You Know” features a great bass guitar line and some kickdrum-and-handclap (and what I’m pretty sure are wood blocks) percussion. And beyond the bass guitar, there’s a wonderful lead-guitar melody at work there too.
The album is free on Bergen’s bandcamp page, and it’s worth checking out. Grab two samples below.
