Stone Coal White: The Original Black Keys from DJ Shadow

Take The Black Keys, rough up the sound a little bit, give them some funk, take ‘em back to Jimi Hendrix and you come out with Stone Coal White. They are both from Ohio and maintain that garage sound that I instantly loved coming from Thickfreakness. Stone Coal White adds another element of funk to the picture. Songs like “Move Your Hand” and “Hell Below” bring the bass line and rhythm guitar that makes you want to shout like James Brown. Then you have the more bluesy, garage sounds of “You Know” and “Peoples”. I have to thank DJ Shadow an amazing job reissuing funk/soul records from his personal label Cali-Tex imprint. I wouldn’t have ever heard this without him. Stream the album here
