M83 will release the Midnight City Remix EP on September 27, a full three weeks before his three-years-in-the-making double album Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming hits the shelves on October 18 via Mute Records. The EP will feature remixes of the full-lengths first single by talents like Big Black Delta, Man Without Country and Team Ghost.
And then there’s this 7-minute, 29-second re-interpretation of “Midnight City” by Danish electronic music producer/artist Trentemoller, which flips the adrenaline-and-horn-infused original into a sparsely populated landscape where Anthony Gonzalez’s vocals are brought to the forefront and accompanied by a repeating guitar strum.
The best remixes are creatures in their own right, not merely gussied-up versions of the original. Trentemoller accomplishes that feat by accentuating some of the original’s smaller touches and removing much of what made “Midnight City” a driving, danceable anthem. It’s a risky move, but the way this remix echoes — as if a lone DJ in some spooky forest is sending beats and blips slicing through a foggy dawn — is something special.
