Florence + The Machine: “Shake It Out”

There is something undeniably alluring about Florence Welch. Perhaps it’s her shining red hair or, more likely, it’s her ability to effortlessly go from first to fourth gear vocally. The new single from Welch’s second LP as Florence + The Machine, entitled “Shake It Out,” is a perfect example of that very skill. The song begins with the dull hum of an organ with Welch singing over top in her understated way. And then near the 40-second mark, she utters the word “dawn” and the song begins its beautiful build to the soaring chorus:

Shake it out, shake it out. And it’s hard to dance with the devil on your back, so shake him off!

And suddenly I’m full of energy. Suddenly I feel like I could take on the world. And now I’m playing the song again and again. And I really want to fast-forward to November 1 so I can hear all of Welch’s sophomore album, which we’ve learned will be titled Ceremonials. Man, this song kicks some serious ass. Thanks to the fine folks over at Listen Before You Buy.
